The Age The Age is a broadsheet daily newspaper in Melbourne , Australia that was founded on October 17 , 1854 , and is published by The Age Company Ltd, a subsidiary of John Fairfax Holdings Limited , the group also responsible for The Sydney Morning Herald , The Canberra Times , The Dominion Post , and The Australian Financial Review .
Its only local rival is the Murdoch tabloid Herald Sun .
The Age 's editorial position is reasonably consistent with the modern social-democratic position - mostly pro free-trade and moderately liberal on social issues. For example, The Age regularly prints featured opinion pieces from The Guardian , a left-leaning British broadsheet.
The Age features the cartoons of Michael Leunig and Ron Tandberg.
The current editor is Michael Gawenda, with Malcolm Schmidtke editing The Sunday Age .
