FIFA

Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is the international governing body of the sport of football (sometimes called soccer). It is based in Zurich, Switzerland.

FIFA was formed in Paris on March 21, 1904 and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2004. It announced in April 2004 that it is expecting to earn $144 million profit on $1.64 billion in revenue between 2003 and 2006

The organisation works in conjunction with regional arms that oversee football development in the different parts of the world. The six confederations that comprise FIFA (and the regions that they govern) are:

FIFA organizes, amongst others, the following football competitions:

  1. Football World Cup
  2. Olympic Football Tournament
  3. Football World Youth Championship
  4. Football U17 World Championship
  5. Women's World Cup
  6. FIFA U19 Women's World Championship
  7. Confederations Cup
  8. Club World Championship

FIFA also promotes the sport, regulates the transfer of players between teams, awards the FIFA World Player of the Year, and publishes the FIFA World Rankings every month.

The laws of football that govern the game, are maintained by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which consists of four representatives from FIFA. and one representative each from The Football Association, the Scottish Football Association, the Football Association of Wales, and the Irish Football Association.
