Fine

A fine is money paid as a financial punishment for the commission of minor crimes or as the settlement of a claim. A synonym is mulct.

Common examples of fines are monies paid for violations of traffic laws. Fines can also be used as a form of tax. Money for bail may be applied toward a fine.

A fine for alienation, in feudal law, is a sum of money paid to the lord by a tenant whenever he had occasion to make over his land to another. A fine of lands is a species of conveyance in the form of a fictitious suit compromised or terminated by the acknowledgment of the previous owner that such land was the right of the other party.

Adjective

In general, the adjective "fine" is a synonym for the adjective "good"

In Australia, "fine" is an adjective used to describe the weather as being good, with a nearly-clear sky. (In some other countries, "fair" is used instead.) In particular, it is generally used instead of "sunny" (day) or "clear" (night), to denote that there are high and thin cirrus clouds, but otherwise no obstruction of the sky.

"Fine" or "finely" is also an antonym for "coarse" or "coarsely", as in finely-ground flour or cornmeal. It may also mean high-quality, as with a fine wine.
