.gov.uk.gov.uk is part of the .uk Domain Name System. It is for use by Government (both local and national). It is managed by UKERNA (operators of JANET and .ac.uk) on behalf of the Government.
It is only open to Government bodies and is subject to strict rules.
There was at one time another second level domain, .govt.uk, used by various departments but this was finally phased out in 2003, having been moribund for several years.
.uk is operated by Nominet UK.
