Instructional design

Instructional Design (a/k/a Instructional Systems Design) is the analysis of learning needs and systematic development of instruction. Instructional design models typically specify a method, that if followed will facilitate the transfer of knowledge, skills and attitude to the recipient or acquirer of the instruction.

There are a variety of instructional design approaches to choose from. The theory of instructional design in the USA relies heavily on the work Robert M. Gagné and his research at Florida State University (USA). His model "Nine Events of Instruction" has been developed in the 1970s and influenced the further discussion in theory and application.

One approach in the training field is the ADDIE model. Use the acronym when referring to this model and know that it stands for:

  • analysis (of learner characteristics, of the task to be learned, and of any skill gaps)
  • design (choosing an educational approach)
  • develop (creating instructional or training materials and other supporting materials)
  • implement (i.e. deliver / deploy instruction)
  • evaluate (check that the instruction had the desired result)

In the 1990s the concepts of Instructional Design were challenged by the then popular theories of constructivism.

There is an Instructional Design Timeline if you want to know more about the History of Instructional Design
