A. G. Curtin Andrew Gregg Curtin
Andrew Gregg Curtin (15 January 1861 - 15 January 1867) was governor of Pennsylvania from 1861 to 1867. Curtin was trained as a lawyer and earned a reptutation as a Whig orator. He declined a gubernatorial run in 1854, deferring to James Pollock, who appointed Curtin Superintendent of Public Instruction. He ran for governor in 1860 as a candidate supported by factions of the Republican, Whig, and Democratic parties. Curtin led the state through the period of the American Civil War. Following his term in office, Curtin was appointed Minister to Russia and finally three terms in the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat.
