An (mythology)

In Sumerian mythology, An was the god of heaven in the Sumerian pantheon until about 2500 BC. He was then replaced by his two sons, Enlil and Enki. An was considered the personification of heaven, as Enlil of the sky and Enki of the water. An relates to the Babylonian god Anu, though he did not have the sovereignty over the fate of those on Earth that Anu did, having given that power to Enlil.
